About Fireslug Studios

Fireslug Studios is starting work on new projects and wants to bolster the team in preparation. Note: Fireslug Studios is currently in a pre-funding stage, and our entire team is working remotely on a voluntary basis. We hope to offer paid in-house or freelance roles once we secure funding or on successful project release. We provide references and opportunities for portfolio development to those looking to build a career in the wider industry. Additionally, we arrange for sharing elements of your contributions professionally, subject to our non-disclosure agreement (NDA), regardless of the project’s completion state.

Responsibilities

Asset Production: Create high-quality 2D art assets for characters, environments, props, and UI elements, ensuring all artwork aligns with the visual style and creative direction outlined in the Game Design Document (GDD). Integrate Completed Art Assets: Participate in the integration of finalised art assets using Git and Unity, ensuring they are correctly implemented. Cross-Team Collaboration: Collaborate with game designers, programmers and other artists to ensure there is consistency across asset contributions. Participate in Feedback Cycles: Contribute on visual direction and provide feedback on the overall aesthetic of the project, ensuring design goals are met.

Essential Skills

Proven experience as a 2D artist, with a strong portfolio showcasing game art and character design. Proficiency in industry-standard software, or equivalents. (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Aseprite, Figma etc.) Basic understanding of the Unity game engine. Strong understanding of visual storytelling, composition, and colour theory. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills for regular interaction with cross-functional teams. Previous experience with project management software such as Trello, Jira, or Height.

Desirable Skills

Experience in creating UI assets and an understanding of UI/UX principles. Experience with Unity 6’s UI Toolkit and/or using HTML and CSS. Strong understanding of graphic design principles and/or creating marketing assets. Experience in creating 2D animations (sprite sheets, frame-by-frame, etc.). Understanding of key animation principles. Experience implementing animations in Unity. Familiarity with version control software, such as Git or BitBucket.

Commitment

Minimum of 12 hours per week or equivalent contributions. Able to attend and contribute to weekly meetings. Available to respond to questions and queries during weekdays as needed.
