🏢 Company: The Mad Network
🇺🇸 Location: United States
🌎 Work Model: Remote
New Information added to this re-listed post!
The MAD Network is looking to bring on two new freelance map makers into our ever growing Team MAD, a team of wonderful folk who create content for our range of monthly TTRPG Patreons and projects.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for somebody who enjoys being part of a team, is able to bring their own creative ideas, and can manage their own time and workload. Experience and Enthusiasm for Fantasy (Dungeons & Dragons) and Sci-Fi games and media is essential.
Access to and familiarity with Clip Studio Paint Software
Clip Studio Paint is our software of choice when it comes to making maps, so you will need a copy. We provide an instructional YouTube playlist of how to use CSP with MAD Network brushes and assets to create maps in our art style.
Digital Drawing Experience
Members of Team MAD must be able to demonstrate an ability to draw in our style; while you will use our library of brushes and assets, you will also have to create your own as well so that we continue to keep our maps fresh.
Experience with TTRPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons
Our maps need to be engaging and atmospheric for customers, and awareness and experience of what makes an interesting dungeon or encounter is an essential skill to have.
Familiarity with Discord
We use the Discord software to organise and communicate with our team.
Foundry VTT Knowledge
Knowledge of Foundry VTT is ideal (but not essential), having a base knowledge of how Foundry VTT helps us create maps that use more complex module features.
What we can offer
Base Rate of $250 per Map/Asset Pack. Using our assets and brushes, put together your own maps. Opportunity to earn more with larger, more complex, or multiple maps. We pay our team via Payoneer.
Flexible Hours that you choose
With month long deadlines and multiple members of the team, we’re able to work around most schedules and you choose when you work.
Supportive Team of map makers
We have a great core team of artists that are always willing to help each other out, from tips, tricks, to processes.
Opportunities for other projects
We’re always looking to start up new projects, Patreons, and Kickstarters, and look to our team to put them in key positions and help them make more money!
Our Application Process
As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to complete a short practical exercise using our instructional guides and a selection of provided MAD assets, to create a small single sample room. This is to establish:
Access to, and familiarity with, Clip Studio Paint
Comprehension and Implementation of our art style tutorials
A good sense of what makes for an interesting map scene (i.e. ‘Dungeon sense’)
As a team producing cycling monthly content for our customers, we are particularly keen to hire artists to the team who expect to be available most months. A successful applicant will be expected to begin working as of our next monthly product cycle, which is 20th June – 20th July.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
“How many maps can an artist work on in a month?” To start with, artists are assigned one map a month. This is simply because it often takes a while to adopt our art style, and the first couple of maps typically come with a lot of questions, more feedback to be implemented etc. Once you’re comfortable with creating maps in our style and have demonstrated that you’re able to work in line with our submission deadlines we’re happy for you to do as much work as you’re able to (that there’s room for in the budget!) We have some artists who create 3-4 pieces per month.
“How big are the maps?”
Our standard $250 map size is 20×30 @ 300ppi, where 1 square inch = 5ft of movement on a map.
“Do artists share parts of their map development, or do they do all of the map themselves?”
Our artists are the sole worker on their map, from the sketch through to submission phase. This way you have ownership of the entire piece and there are fewer bottlenecks or opportunities for miscommunications or misaligned expectations if multiple team members are working on the same map.
“How much communication is expected for the role?”
Everybody works at different paces and has different availability throughout the week, so we have no expectation of a certain number of hours clocked per day/week. We do expect steady communication and updates throughout the course of the month – when you’ve done some work on the piece and have updates to show there’s a personal Discord channel for you to share updates in. The team does meet once a week on a Monday via Discord, and although attendance is not mandatory due to timezones etc we do expect weekly Monday updates as a minimum.
“I’m in <Timezone>. Does this have an impact on my ability to do the role?”
No – Our team is spread around the globe, and with the exception of our non-compulsory weekly meeting, all of our deadlines are on a date “in your timezone”, as opposed to specific times.
