Marketing Artist Jobs FAQ

What does a marketing artist do in a game studio?
Marketing artists create the promotional imagery and visual assets used to sell and market games — key art, box covers, social media content, trailer stills, website imagery, store page assets, and advertising materials. They work with the marketing team to ensure the game's visual identity is consistent and compelling across all public-facing channels. Unlike in-game artists, their output is seen by players before they ever play.
What tools do marketing artists use?
Photoshop and Illustrator are core tools for all marketing artists. Many also work in 3D — Maya, Blender, or Unreal Engine — to create or render promotional assets. Motion design skills (After Effects) are increasingly expected for social media and animated ad content. Strong knowledge of print and digital format requirements is essential.
What is the average marketing artist salary in games?
In the US: Junior Marketing Artists earn $50K-$70K, mid-level $70K-$95K, Senior Marketing Artists $90K-$120K, and Lead roles $110K-$145K. Publishers and larger studios with dedicated marketing departments typically pay at the higher end.
Is a marketing artist the same as a concept artist?
No, though there is overlap in illustration skills. Concept artists work in production and define how the game looks internally. Marketing artists work post-production or in parallel, creating polished, final-quality imagery for external audiences. Marketing artists often work from existing game assets and need strong compositional and finishing skills rather than ideation skills.
What portfolio should a marketing artist have?
Show a range of promotional illustration styles — key art compositions, character renders, cover designs, and social media assets. Demonstrate your ability to create polish and impact at a glance. Studios want to see that you understand marketing context, not just artistic quality. If you have motion design or animated asset examples, include them. Recreating key art for existing games as portfolio pieces is a strong approach.
