Remote VFX Artist Jobs FAQ

Are there remote VFX artist jobs in games?

Yes. VFX art is well suited to remote work — creating real-time effects in Unreal Engine's Niagara, Unity's VFX Graph, or Houdini requires only a capable workstation and a reliable connection. Remote VFX artist roles exist at AAA studios, cinematic game developers, and fully remote indie teams. Many studios that went remote during 2020 have kept their VFX artists remote long-term.

What does a remote VFX artist do?

Remote VFX artists create the real-time visual effects in games — explosions, fire, water, magic spells, weather, and environmental atmospherics. Work involves building particle systems in Niagara or Unity VFX Graph, simulating effects in Houdini, and integrating them into the game engine within performance budget. Collaboration with tech art, environment, and lighting teams happens asynchronously through shared builds and video reviews.

What is the salary for a remote VFX artist?

In the US: Junior VFX Artists earn $50K-$70K, mid-level $70K-$100K, Senior VFX Artists $95K-$130K, and Lead VFX Artists $115K-$150K. Remote roles generally pay in line with studio-based equivalents, though some studios apply geographic pay adjustments for employees outside major metro areas.

What software do remote VFX artists use?

Unreal Engine's Niagara particle system is the most in-demand tool for game VFX. Unity's VFX Graph is widely used in mobile and indie contexts. Houdini is essential for simulation-heavy FX and is increasingly used to generate assets that drive real-time effects. Substance Designer, After Effects, and Photoshop are also common for VFX texture and flipbook creation. Perforce or Git for version control is standard.

How competitive are remote VFX artist jobs?

Remote VFX artist roles are fewer in number than environment or character roles, and they attract a global applicant pool. Applying within the first 24 hours is critical. ArtBlast sends remote VFX artist jobs daily and the Discord live feed alerts you the moment new roles are posted, giving you a head start over most applicants.
