As a Lead Groom Artist, you will be responsible for leading a team of groom artists, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality groom, including hair, fur & feathers for a variety of characters and creatures across various projects while collaborating with the supervision team to ensure the creative and technical needs are fulfilled.This role requires a strong understanding of the visual effects pipeline, excellent technical and artistic skills, and the ability to mentor and guide junior artists.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage a team of CFX Groom artists, providing clear guidance, feedback, and technical supportCreate high-quality hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters and creatures, adhering to artistic and technical specificationsDevelop and implement efficient grooming workflows, tools, and pipelinesTroubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to grooming, including simulation, texturing, rendering and integrationOptimize grooms for performance and memory efficiency without compromising visual fidelityCollaborate closely with various departments, including modeling, surfacing and internal CFX setup artists to ensure seamless integration of groom into the pipelineCollaborate with CFX Department Supervisor/s and Show Supervisor/s to maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across all CFX assets in the projectContribute to the development of departmental best practices and documentationParticipate in bidding and scheduling discussions as neededEnsure that all CFX work adheres to project deadlines and budget constraintsMentor and train junior groom artists, fostering their growth and developmentContribute to the development of departmental best practices and documentation
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Graphics, Animation, or a related field, or equivalent professional experienceMinimum four (4) years of CFX groom experience in live-action visual effects for feature films, episodic or similar production environments with a strong portfolio showcasing a diverse range of groom workProven experience in a leadership or supervisory roleExpertise in industry-standard grooming software, Houdini, is requiredStrong understanding of hair, fur, and feather anatomy, physics, and rendering principlesDemonstrable experience with character rigging, modeling, and texturing workflows as they relate to groomingExcellent artistic eye for detail, form, and realismExcellent understanding of visual effects pipelines and production workflowsAbility to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlinesExcellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skillsExceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skillsExcellent organizational skillsAbility to take direction and constructive criticismFamiliarity with scripting languages is a plus (Python, VEX)Experience with character simulation is a plusExperience with Nuke/Mari/V-Ray/3dsMax is a plusOther DCC knowledge is a plus
