Lighting Artist Jobs FAQ

What does a lighting artist do in games?
Lighting artists set the mood, atmosphere, and visual direction of game environments through light placement, color, and intensity. They work in real-time engines like Unreal or Unity, balancing visual quality with performance budgets. They also handle cinematic lighting for cutscenes and trailers.
What skills do lighting artists need?
Deep knowledge of Unreal Engine or Unity lighting systems, including Lumen, baked lighting, and dynamic shadows. Understanding of color theory, exposure, and real-world light behavior. Experience with cinematic lighting using Arnold or V-Ray for trailers and cutscenes is a strong differentiator.
What is the average lighting artist salary?
In the US: Junior Lighting Artists earn $52K-$70K, Mid-Level $70K-$95K, Senior $92K-$125K, and Lead positions $120K-$150K. Artists who can work across both real-time and cinematic pipelines tend to command higher salaries.
Do lighting artists need to know programming?
Not typically, but basic shader knowledge and understanding of how rendering pipelines work is helpful. Some studios expect lighting artists to write simple Blueprint scripts in Unreal or shader graph nodes to achieve specific lighting effects.
Is lighting artist a rare job in games?
Dedicated lighting artist roles are more common at large AAA studios. At smaller studios, environment artists often handle lighting as part of their role. If you specialize in lighting, your most consistent opportunities will be at studios with large environment art teams.
Are there remote lighting artist jobs?
Yes, though lighting work sometimes requires close collaboration with environment and engine teams. Many studios have adapted to remote workflows with screen sharing and async review processes. ArtBlast includes work model details on every listing.
