Illustrator Jobs FAQ

What kind of illustrator jobs exist in the game industry?
Game studios hire illustrators for key art (box covers, splash screens), card art for TCGs like Magic or Hearthstone, character illustrations for select screens, marketing materials, concept illustration, and narrative artwork for visual novels and RPGs.
What software do game illustrators use?
Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard. Procreate is widely used for character work. Clip Studio Paint for illustration workflows. Some illustrators use Illustrator for vector work or Blender for 3D reference setup before painting.
What is the average game illustrator salary?
In the US: Junior Illustrators earn $45K-$62K, Mid-Level $62K-$86K, Senior $82K-$112K, and Lead $105K-$138K. Card game studios sometimes pay very well for top illustrators. Freelance illustrators can earn significantly more per project.
What makes a strong game illustration portfolio?
Diversity of subject matter (characters, scenes, environments), consistent style, strong storytelling, and work demonstrating understanding of what makes effective key art. Showing published or shipped work is a significant advantage.
Do game illustrators work in-house or freelance?
Both. Many studios hire in-house illustrators for ongoing content needs, especially card games and mobile games with regular content releases. Others commission freelance illustrators per project. Freelancers often work with multiple studios simultaneously.
