Scientific Illustrator Jobs FAQ

How do I find scientific illustrator jobs?

ArtBlast curates scientific illustrator jobs daily from publishers, universities, museums, research groups, and health organisations worldwide. Subscribe to get 10-60+ opportunities in your inbox every morning with direct apply links.

What is the average scientific illustrator salary?

Junior scientific illustrators earn $42K-$60K, mid-level $52K-$72K, and senior illustrators $72K-$108K in the US. Lead roles range from $95K to $145K.

Do I need a science degree to be a scientific illustrator?

Not always, but you need to read technical material accurately. Many working scientific illustrators come from an art background with strong biology or anatomy self-study, and formal medical illustration programmes exist for the specialist end.

What should a scientific illustration portfolio show?

Accuracy first. Include work drawn from real specimens, scans or papers, show your reference alongside the final piece, and include at least one labelled diagram so employers can see you handle typography and legends.

Are there remote scientific illustrator jobs?

Yes. Publishing and research illustration is frequently remote or freelance. ArtBlast includes work model info on every listing so you can filter by remote, hybrid, or on-site.
