Visual Artist Jobs FAQ

What does a visual artist do in a game studio?
Visual artists in game studios create 2D artwork across a wide range of needs: UI assets, splash screens, loading art, promotional materials, in-game illustrations, and visual development work. The role varies by studio but generally covers any 2D digital art production that does not fall exclusively under concept art or illustration.
What software do visual artists use?
Adobe Photoshop and Procreate are the most common tools. Many visual artists also use Adobe Illustrator for vector work, Clip Studio Paint for illustration, and Figma or Adobe XD when working on UI-adjacent visuals. Familiarity with Photoshop is almost always required.
What is the average visual artist salary in games?
In the US: Junior Visual Artists earn $45K-$60K, Mid-Level $60K-$82K, Senior $78K-$105K, and Lead $100K-$130K. Mobile studios and companies with heavy 2D art needs tend to hire more visual artists and may pay competitively.
What is the difference between a visual artist and a concept artist?
Concept artists work primarily in early production, designing characters, environments, and props for 3D teams to build from. Visual artists often work across all stages of production, creating finished 2D artwork for use in the game or marketing directly, rather than reference art for other departments.
What makes a strong visual artist portfolio?
Strong visual artists show range across subject matter and styles, with polished finished pieces rather than sketches alone. Studios look for versatility, strong color and composition sense, and work that demonstrates you can match and maintain a visual style guide. Published or shipped work carries extra weight.
