Children's Book Illustrator Jobs FAQ

How do I find children's book illustrator jobs?

ArtBlast curates children's book illustrator jobs daily from publishers, education companies, agencies, and app studios worldwide. Subscribe to get 10-60+ opportunities in your inbox every morning with direct apply links.

What is the average children's book illustrator salary?

Salaried roles run roughly $52K-$72K mid-level in the US, with senior roles $72K-$108K. Trade picture book work is often paid as an advance against royalties instead, so a single title is rarely a full year of income.

Do I need an agent to illustrate children's books?

Not for educational and work for hire projects, which hire directly. For trade picture books an agent helps considerably, since many large publishers do not accept unsolicited portfolios.

What should a children's book portfolio show?

The same character in several scenes, doing different things, with different expressions. Editors need proof you can carry a character across a whole book, not one beautiful standalone image.

Are there remote children's book illustrator jobs?

Yes. Almost all of this work is remote or freelance. ArtBlast includes work model info on every listing so you can filter by remote, hybrid, or on-site.
