Background Artist Jobs FAQ

How do I find background artist jobs?
ArtBlast curates background artist jobs daily from animation studios, games companies, and comic publishers worldwide. Subscribe to get 10-60+ opportunities in your inbox every morning with direct apply links.
What is the average background artist salary?
Junior background artists earn $42K-$60K, mid-level $52K-$72K, and senior artists $72K-$108K in the US. Lead background artists range from $95K to $145K.
What is the difference between a background artist and a background designer?
Designers draw the line work and architecture of a scene. Painters take that drawing and render it in colour, light and texture. Smaller studios often combine both into one role.
What should a background art portfolio show?
Painted environments in more than one style, plus the drawing underneath. Studios hire background artists to match an existing look, so range and perspective control matter more than personal style.
Are there remote background artist jobs?
Yes. Background painting is frequently remote or freelance, especially in television animation. ArtBlast includes work model info on every listing.
