Comic and Manga Artist Salary Guide: Page Rates and Income in 2026

Comic artists are paid in a way almost no other art job is: by the page. That makes "comic artist salary" a tricky number, because yearly income depends on how many pages you draw, who you draw them for and whether you own what you create. This comic artist salary guide gives you real page rates, real yearly income figures and the manga side of the story.

How Comic Artists Get Paid

  • Page rates: publishers pay a fixed fee per finished page, split by task: pencils, inks, colors and letters.
  • Work for hire: on company-owned characters the publisher owns the work. Some contracts add royalties or incentives on top of the page rate.
  • Creator-owned books: you own the work and share the income with the publisher, often with a smaller or no advance.
  • Original art sales: artists who draw on paper can sell their original pages to collectors.
  • Direct support: crowdfunding, memberships, conventions and commissions.

Comic Artist Page Rates

The 2024 Comics Worker Survey by The Cartoonist Cooperative asked 189 U.S. comics workers about their 2023 work. These were the average page rates:

  • Pencils: $87.46 per page (highest reported: $700)
  • Inks: $76.21 per page (highest reported: $225)
  • Colors: $67.94 per page (highest reported: $200)
  • Letters: $42.72 per page (highest reported: $180)
  • Scripting: $69.39 per page (highest reported: $1,500)

Averages hide a wide range. Established artists at the largest publishers report rates several times higher, while small publishers and first books pay less. A full page often takes a day or more of work, so a page rate is best compared with a day rate.

How Much Do Comic Artists Make a Year?

The same survey found that U.S. comics workers made an average of around $27,000 a year from traditionally published comics, with a median of $12,000. The gap between the two shows that a small group earns well while most creators earn a modest part of their living from comics.

For comparison, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2025 median of $55,490 for salaried fine artists, including illustrators. That is why many comic artists combine comics with steady work in related fields: 2D art for games, storyboarding for animation, concept art and commercial illustration.

How Much Do Manga Artists Make?

Manga artists in Japan are also paid per page, through a manuscript fee, plus royalties when chapters are collected into volumes. In 2023, Shueisha publicly disclosed that Weekly Shonen Jump pays new artists at least 18,700 yen per black-and-white page and 28,050 yen or more per full-color page. Veteran creators noted that beginner rates were once as low as 8,000 yen per page.

A weekly series means close to 20 pages a week, so the page fee alone can add up, but most manga artists also pay assistants out of their own income. Royalties on collected volumes are where hit series earn most of their money, and publishers do not publish standard royalty rates, so treat any single figure you read online with caution.

What Raises a Comic Artist's Income

  • Speed with quality: more finished pages per month means more income at the same rate.
  • Owning your work: creator-owned books, webcomics and licensing keep long-term income with you.
  • Original art and conventions: pages, prints and commissions add income outside page rates.
  • Related staff roles: storyboard, 2D and concept art jobs pay steady salaries and use the same skills.

How to Earn More as a Comic Artist

  1. Know your page rate in hours. Track how long a page takes and price accordingly.
  2. Negotiate on data. Use the survey rates above when a publisher makes an offer.
  3. Keep rights where you can. Reprint, foreign and media rights can pay for years.
  4. Mix steady work with comics. A part-time or freelance studio role smooths out the gaps between books.
  5. Apply early. Staff comic and storyboard roles are few, and the first applicants get seen.
