Frequently Asked Questions

What does a shader artist do?
Shader artists write and build the code and material graphs that control how surfaces look in a game engine at runtime. They work in HLSL, Unreal material graphs, Unity Shader Graph, or similar tools to create everything from realistic water to stylized cel shading.
Do shader artists need to code?
Yes. HLSL is the most important language for real-time game development. GLSL is needed for OpenGL/Vulkan environments. Most studios use Unreal's custom node system or Unity's Shader Graph, but deeper technical roles require HLSL/GLSL proficiency.
What does a shader artist earn?
Junior shader artists in the US earn $58,000-$82,000. Mid-level $82,000-$125,000. Senior shader artists earn $115,000-$170,000. Lead and principal roles at top studios (Epic, NVIDIA, Guerrilla) can reach $210,000 or more.
Is shader artist the same as material artist?
Closely related but distinct. Material artists focus on PBR material setups using node graphs in Substance Designer, Unreal, or Unity. Shader artists write lower-level HLSL/GLSL code. Many studios use both titles interchangeably; others separate them by technical depth.
What studios hire shader artists?
Epic Games, NVIDIA, Guerrilla Games, CD Projekt Red, Rockstar Games, and Playground Games all have dedicated shader artist positions. Smaller studios often combine this with the technical artist role.
