What the Interview Process Looks Like

VFX artist interviews test both artistic sensibility and technical depth. Knowing what each stage evaluates helps you prepare the right evidence at the right time.

Portfolio Review

Studios want to see real-time in-engine effects first. Breakdown videos with node graphs or particle system screenshots signal technical fluency. Offline simulations alone are not enough for game roles.

Recruiter Screen

30-45 minutes covering your background, primary tools, and engine experience. Ask whether the role is gameplay VFX, environment VFX, or UI — these require different skill emphasis.

VFX Art Test

3-7 days. A brief with a specific game scenario — combat ability, weather event, destruction. Performance budget is usually included. Deliver clean node graphs and documented systems, not just pretty captures.

12 Questions Studios Actually Ask

Process
Walk us through how you approach creating a new VFX from a design brief.
Start by breaking the brief into its visual components — what is the core read at a glance, what secondary motion supports it, and what ambient detail rewards close inspection. Gather reference before opening any software. Build a rough proxy quickly to test the timing and scale in context, then iterate toward final quality. Interviewers want to see a structured process, not a “I just start and see what happens” answer.
Tip: Mentioning that you test in-engine at low fidelity before committing to texture resolution or shader complexity signals production maturity.
Real-Time
How do you approach real-time VFX performance budgeting?
Start with the platform target and the effect’s context — a player ability that fires frequently needs a much lower particle count than a one-time environmental explosion. Profile GPU cost using RenderDoc or Unreal’s GPU Visualizer. Optimize by reducing overdraw (opacity and blend mode choice matters), merging particles into fewer emitters, and using flipbooks or mesh particles instead of multiple overlapping planes.
Tip: Knowing the cost of overdraw versus shader complexity versus particle count shows you understand the GPU pipeline. Name specific profiling tools you use by default.
Houdini
Describe a Houdini effect you built. What was the brief and how did you approach the simulation?
Be specific about the effect type — rigid body destruction, pyro fire, FLIP fluid, vellum cloth — and describe the simulation setup, the cache pipeline to game engine, and any Houdini Engine or Houdini PDG integration if relevant. If you baked to flipbooks or VAT (Vertex Animation Textures), explain that workflow. Studios want to know you can deliver Houdini work into a real-time engine, not just produce offline renders.
Shaders
How do you use shader techniques in your VFX work?
Describe specific techniques: UV animation for fire or water, panning noise for smoke, dissolve using a gradient mask and clip value, distortion using a normal map to offset UVs, vertex color driven effects on mesh particles. Explain how you decide between a shader-driven effect versus a particle system — shader approaches are cheaper when the geometry can carry the visual, particle systems are better when you need position variation.
Engine
What’s your experience with Unreal Niagara or Unity VFX Graph?
Be specific about which system and describe a complex setup you built — a spawner with conditional logic, a GPU particle simulation, or a custom Niagara module. If you’ve used both, note the differences. Studios on Unreal 5 specifically look for Niagara fluency; GPU particle counts and the difference between CPU and GPU simulations are common follow-up questions.
Tip: If you only know one engine, say so directly and describe how you learn new systems. Claiming false fluency gets exposed fast in tests.
Texture
How do you create and optimise VFX texture sheets?
Describe your flipbook workflow — frame count, resolution tradeoffs (64×64 vs 128×128 per frame), whether you use Houdini to bake simulations to texture, or hand-paint in Substance or Photoshop. Optimization: use power-of-two resolutions, pack multiple channels (RGB for color, A for opacity/mask), and reduce frame count before reducing resolution when budgets are tight. Channel packing is a specific skill studios test for.
Feedback
How do you handle it when an art director says an effect “doesn’t feel right” without more specific notes?
Ask targeted questions to narrow the feedback: “Is the scale off, the timing too fast, or the color not reading correctly against the background?” Most subjective notes are reacting to one of three things: timing, scale, or read clarity. Once you identify which, you can fix it quickly. Going off and guessing wastes both your time and theirs.
Collaboration
How do you work with gameplay designers when implementing combat VFX?
The visual impact frame needs to match the hitbox activation moment — not lead it or lag it. Work with design early to agree on the timing before polishing the effect. Get the design brief in writing so you both have a reference point. If the feel changes after you’ve shipped the effect, that’s a design change, not a VFX fix — document that distinction clearly.
Style
How do you adapt your VFX style to match a game’s visual direction?
Start with reference pulled from the game’s existing art — color palette, particle silhouettes, whether the style is grounded or stylized, how other effects handle secondary motion. Build a small test effect and run it by the art director before building out a full set. Matching visual language is more important than technical impressiveness.
Tip: If you’re interviewing for a specific studio, study the VFX in their existing titles before the interview. Being able to reference their actual work is a strong signal of genuine interest.
Self-Assessment
What’s the VFX skill area you’re actively working to improve?
Name something real — advanced Houdini PDG for pipeline automation, Niagara GPU simulation, fluid simulations for water effects. Describe how you’re practicing it. Vague answers like “I want to get better at everything” signal low self-awareness. Specific answers with a clear learning path signal a disciplined artist who would grow quickly at a studio.
Technical
What’s the difference between additive and translucent blending and when do you use each?
Additive adds its color on top of whatever is behind it — correct for fire, magic, energy effects where you want a glowing appearance. Translucent blends using alpha — correct for smoke, fog, and soft particle effects. Additive is cheaper and avoids depth sorting issues. Translucent requires correct sort order. A common mistake is using translucent for everything, which creates overdraw and sorting artifacts in dense scenes.
Portfolio
What should a VFX artist portfolio show that demonstrates game-readiness?
In-engine captures, not offline renders. Breakdown videos showing the particle system setup, shader node graph, and texture sheets alongside the final effect. A range of effect types: combat, ambient, destruction, UI. Performance notes showing you understand budget constraints. The breakdowns are often weighted equally to the final visual quality — they prove you could build it again, differently, inside any studio’s pipeline.
Tip: Label every effect with the engine and renderer used. Interviewers are checking compatibility with their pipeline from the first frame.

What to Prepare Before the Interview

Reel Depth

Performance Fluency
