Background Painter Jobs FAQ

What does a background painter do in games?

Background painters create 2D painted environments for games, animated cutscenes, and concept art. In 2D and 2.5D games they paint the full visual environments players move through. In 3D games they often contribute painted background elements, skyboxes, and environment concept overpaints for art direction.

What tools do background painters use?

Photoshop is the industry standard. Procreate for iPad-based workflows. Clip Studio Paint for stylized and anime-influenced work. Some background painters also use Blender or Maya for rough 3D blocking before painting on top. A strong drawing tablet setup is essential.

What is the average background painter salary?

In the US: Junior Background Painters earn $45K-$62K, Mid-Level $62K-$85K, Senior $82K-$112K, and Lead positions $108K-$138K. Salaries vary by game type, studio size, and whether the role is for in-game art or cinematic production.

What types of games hire background painters?

2D and 2.5D games (platformers, RPGs, visual novels) are the most consistent employers of dedicated background painters. Animation studios producing game cinematics also hire them. AAA studios with strong cinematic departments occasionally post for background or matte painting artists too.

Is background painter different from matte painter?

Overlapping but distinct. Background painters typically focus on 2D illustration and painting for in-game environments, especially in 2D games. Matte painters often work in 3D hybrid workflows and focus on distant backgrounds and skyboxes for 3D games and cinematics. Both require strong painting skills but serve different pipelines.
