Clip Studio Paint vs Procreate (2026): Which Should You Buy?
Clip Studio Paint vs Procreate is really a question about where you draw. Procreate is a $12.99 one-time purchase that runs on iPad only and is the fastest way to start sketching and painting with an Apple Pencil. Clip Studio Paint costs more, but it runs on Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone and Android and adds the line, comic and animation tools Procreate leaves out. This guide compares both on price, drawing feel, comics, animation, files and what studios ask for in job posts.

The Short Answer
Buy Procreate if you own an iPad, mostly sketch, paint or illustrate, and want a polished tool for a one-time $12.99. Pick Clip Studio Paint if you make comics, manga or webtoons, animate, need clean vector line art and rulers, or want the same program on a computer, a tablet and a phone. Artists who draw seriously often own both: Procreate for fast sketches on the couch, Clip Studio Paint for finished line work and pages.

What Studios Ask For: ArtBlast Job Data
ArtBlast counted how many of 508 distinct 2D art, concept art, illustration, comic and visual development job posts (full descriptions only, March to August 2026) name each program. A post is counted once however many tools it lists.
| Software named in the job post | Posts (of 508) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Photoshop | 261 | 51% |
| Procreate | 68 | 13% |
| Clip Studio Paint | 28 | 6% |
The takeaway: Procreate is named more than twice as often as Clip Studio Paint, but almost never alone. Of the 68 posts that name Procreate, 65 also name Photoshop, and only 3 name Procreate without it. Of the 28 posts that name Clip Studio Paint, 25 also name Photoshop. Studios treat both as sketching or illustration tools beside a Photoshop pipeline. A mention means the studio lists the tool as a skill, not that every artist must own it. If you are building a portfolio for hiring, either program is fine, as long as you can deliver layered PSD files and know Photoshop. Price: One Payment vs a Plan
Procreate is $12.99, paid once on the App Store, with no subscription and Family Sharing for up to six people. It requires iPadOS 16.3 or later. The current version is 5.4.14 (September 18, 2026). Its sister apps are sold separately: Procreate Pocket for iPhone ($5.99) and Procreate Dreams for animation ($12.99).
Clip Studio Paint is more complicated, and the iPad matters here. The iPad app is free to download but needs a plan. On the single-device plan, PRO costs $4.49 a month or $26.99 a year, and EX costs $8.99 a month or $76.99 a year. The purchase page advertises plans from $0.99 a month with the first three months free. The one-time license (Version 5.0: PRO $63, EX $277) works on Windows and macOS only, and later feature updates need the optional Update Pass at $10.99 a year for PRO.
Over three years on an iPad, Procreate costs $12.99 in total and Clip Studio Paint PRO costs $80.97 on the yearly plan, so Procreate is about $68 cheaper. On a computer, the $63 one-time license makes Clip Studio Paint a one-off cost too. There is a long Clip Studio Paint free trial, so you can compare it with Procreate on the same drawing before paying. The Procreate listing on the App Store shows no trial.
Drawing Feel and Brushes
Procreate is known for how fast and natural it feels. It runs on Apple's Valkyrie graphics engine, ships with hundreds of brushes, and its Brush Studio exposes over 100 settings per brush. StreamLine and stabilization smooth strokes, QuickShape snaps wobbly circles and lines into clean ones, and the interface stays out of the way with gestures made for Apple Pencil. Canvases go up to 16k by 8k on compatible iPad Pros, with over 25 blend modes, layer masks and clipping masks. It also records a time-lapse of every piece, exportable in 4K.
Clip Studio Paint feels more like a studio. Pen stabilization is tunable, vector layers keep lines sharp and editable, the Correct Line tool lets you reshape strokes without redrawing, and rulers handle perspective, symmetry and fisheye lines so backgrounds stay accurate. A 3D model library gives you posable figures and props to draw over. Its brush library is huge, with thousands of brushes and materials in the Clip Studio assets store.
Both programs import Photoshop .abr brush packs, which is the shared option. Brushes made for Clip Studio Paint do not install in Procreate, and the reverse is also true, so check the file type before you buy a pack. Comics, Manga and Webtoons
Clip Studio Paint began as Manga Studio and is the standard here. It has frame border and panel division tools, speech balloons with tails, screen tones, speed and focus lines, text layers and, in EX, multi-page projects, webtoon tools and PDF or e-book export. A full chapter can live in one file.
Procreate has Page Assist, which lets you sketch page by page or begin a comic, and it imports, edits and exports PDFs. That is enough for storyboards and short comics, but not for a long series: there are no panel tools, balloon tools or tones, so panels are drawn by hand.
Animation
Procreate's Animation Assist handles simple frame-by-frame animation with customizable onion skinning, and it exports GIFs, PNG sequences and MP4s. For more, Savage Interactive sells Procreate Dreams, a separate animation app.
Clip Studio Paint has a full cel and timeline system, with PRO limited to simple animation of up to 24 frames and EX needed for full-length work. For a deeper look, see the Clip Studio Paint animation guide and 2D animator jobs.
Platforms and Files
- Clip Studio Paint runs on Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android and Chromebook, and its subscription lets you move between devices with cloud sync (10 GB included). It saves .clip files and exports layered PSD.
- Procreate runs on iPad only. Files are .procreate, with PSD import and export, plus TIFF, PNG, PDF, JPEG, OBJ, USDZ, GIF and MP4 exports. There is no account-based cloud backup, so saving artwork to iCloud or another service is up to you.
Both are built for a pen. Choose hardware with the drawing tablet rankings or the best drawing programs for a Wacom tablet if you work on a computer.
Clip Studio Paint: Pros and Cons
- Pros: vector layers, Correct Line and rulers, 3D models, full comic page tools, a real animation timeline, every platform, a one-time license on computers, a long free trial, cloud sync.
- Cons: the iPad version needs a plan, EX is needed for multi-page comics and long animation, a dense interface that takes time to set up, and a more expensive total cost than Procreate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Clip Studio Paint better than Procreate?
For comics, line art, animation and multi-device work, yes. Procreate is better for fast sketching and painting on an iPad at a lower price. Neither is better for everything, and many artists own both.
What is the difference between EX and PRO in Clip Studio Paint?
PRO covers illustration and single-page comics, with simple animation up to 24 frames. EX adds multi-page comic projects, webtoon tools, PDF and e-book export, and full-length animation tools. EX costs $277 once or $76.99 a year, against $63 and $26.99 for PRO.
Do professionals use Procreate?
Yes, many illustrators and concept artists sketch in it. In ArtBlast's tracking, 68 of 508 2D art job posts (13%) name Procreate, and 65 of those also name Photoshop, so it is usually a sketching tool beside a Photoshop pipeline.
What jobs hire artists who only use Procreate?
Few. Only 3 of the 68 job posts that name Procreate do not also name Photoshop. Freelance illustration, commissions and social media art are where Procreate-only artists work most, so add Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint if you want studio work.
Do Clip Studio brushes work on Procreate?
Not directly. The two programs use different brush formats. Both can import Photoshop .abr brush packs, so those are the brushes you can share between them.
Is it worth getting an iPad just for Procreate?
It is if you want to sketch and paint on a tablet and are happy with iPad-only software. If you work on a computer or Android, Clip Studio Paint or a free program such as Krita covers the same ground without new hardware.
If you do buy one, the best iPad for drawing guide compares the current models and prices.
What are the downsides of Procreate?
Procreate runs only on iPad, has no vector layers or comic page tools, offers basic animation, has no free trial listed and no account-based cloud backup, so you must manage backups yourself.
Is there a better app than Procreate?
It depends on the work. Clip Studio Paint is better for comics and animation, Photoshop for studio files, and Krita or Adobe Fresco for free options. Procreate remains the simplest start on an iPad.
Is Procreate closing?
No. Procreate is still sold on the App Store, and the US listing shows version 5.4.14, updated on September 18, 2026.
Is Clip Studio Paint worth it on iPad?
If you make comics or animation, or switch between iPad and computer, yes: the plan gives you the same software everywhere. If you only sketch, Procreate costs less over time.
