The Short Answer
Choose Photoshop if you want to work at a studio, do concept art, texturing or any job that mixes painting with photo work, type or mockups, or need the file format everyone opens. Choose Clip Studio Paint if you mainly draw: illustration, character art, comics, manga, webtoons or 2D animation, and you want to pay far less. The strongest setup, and the most common one among working artists, is both: sketch and ink in Clip Studio Paint, then export a layered PSD for finishing and delivery in Photoshop.

What Studios Ask For: ArtBlast Job Data
ArtBlast counted how many of 508 distinct 2D art, concept art, illustration, comic and visual development job posts (full descriptions only, March to August 2026) name each program. A post is counted once however many tools it lists.
| Software named in the job post | Posts (of 508) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Photoshop | 261 | 51% |
| Adobe Illustrator | 84 | 17% |
| Procreate | 68 | 13% |
| Clip Studio Paint | 28 | 6% |
The takeaway: Photoshop is named in about nine times as many posts as Clip Studio Paint, and Photoshop with Illustrator together appear in 168 posts (33%). Clip Studio Paint rarely stands alone: 25 of the 28 posts that name it also name Photoshop. In other words, studios treat Clip Studio Paint as a welcome extra, mostly for illustration, anime-style, comic and animation roles, and Photoshop as the baseline. A mention means the studio lists the tool as a skill or part of its pipeline, not that every artist must own it. Price: $22.99 a Month vs $63 Once
Photoshop is subscription only. The single-app plan is US$22.99 a month on an annual commitment billed monthly, which is $275.88 a year and $827.64 over three years. The Photography plan (Photoshop and Lightroom) is $19.99 a month and Creative Cloud Standard is $54.99 a month, all per Adobe's plans page. Clip Studio Paint has two editions and three payment styles (Version 5.0 is the current one-time edition):
- PRO for illustration and single-page comics: $63 once for Windows and macOS, or $26.99 a year on the single-device plan ($4.49 a month).
- EX adds multi-page comic projects, webtoon tools, PDF and e-book export and full-length animation: $277 once, or $76.99 a year ($8.99 a month).
- The purchase page also advertises plans from $0.99 a month with the first three months free. Subscriptions cover iPad, iPhone and Android and include feature updates, while the one-time license gets later features through the optional Update Pass ($10.99 a year for PRO, $31.99 for EX).
Over three years, Clip Studio Paint PRO on a yearly plan costs $80.97 and EX costs $230.97, against $827.64 for Photoshop. The one-time PRO license is $63 and stays yours. A Clip Studio Paint free trial is available before you buy.
Drawing, Brushes and Line Art
Clip Studio Paint is designed around the pen. Stabilization is tunable, vector layers keep lines sharp and editable after you draw them, the Correct Line tool pinches, simplifies, joins and re-widths strokes, and perspective, symmetry and fisheye rulers snap freehand lines to guides. A 3D model library gives you posable figures to draw over, and its asset library has thousands of brushes and materials. It imports Photoshop .abr brushes and .grd gradients, so existing Photoshop resources carry over.
Photoshop has a deep raster brush engine with smoothing, a huge library of free and paid brushes, blend modes, layer styles, masks and adjustment layers, and it is the strongest tool for painting over photos and building final images. It is not designed for clean vector line work: it has no equivalent of Clip Studio Paint's Correct Line tool and offers fewer drawing guides. Many artists draw with a tablet and brushes only and are perfectly happy; others find line art easier in Clip Studio Paint.
Comics, Manga and Webtoons
Clip Studio Paint wins this category outright. It has frame border and panel division tools, speech balloons and tails, screen tones, speed and focus line tools, and in EX multi-page projects with webtoon tools and PDF or e-book export. Photoshop has no comic page tools: panels, balloons and tones are built by hand with layers and shapes. If comics are your goal, the time saved in Clip Studio Paint pays for the program quickly.
Photo Editing, Type and Studio Work
This is Photoshop's category. It leads for retouching, compositing, color grading, mockups, type, texture work and game-art pipelines, and it works smoothly with other Adobe apps such as Illustrator, which appears in 17% of the job posts ArtBlast tracked. Clip Studio Paint has tonal correction, gradient maps and correction layers, but it is not a photo editor. Texture artists, concept artists doing photobashing and designers who mix art with layout belong in Photoshop.
Animation
Clip Studio Paint has a cel and timeline system built for hand-drawn animation, with light table onion skinning. PRO is limited to simple animation of up to 24 frames, and EX unlocks full-length animation tools. Photoshop has a timeline for simple frame animation and video, which suits short GIFs and loops but not full cel animation. For a workflow, see the Clip Studio Paint animation guide and 2D animator jobs.
Platforms and Files
- Photoshop runs on Windows, macOS and iPad (the iPad app is free to download and needs a plan for full features). There is no Android version. Its native format is PSD (PSB for very large files), the file nearly every studio and client opens.
- Clip Studio Paint runs on Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android and Chromebook, with 10 GB of cloud storage on plans. It saves .clip files and imports and exports layered PSD. Photoshop does not open .clip files, so export a PSD to hand work over.

Brush sources and install steps are covered in the best Clip Studio Paint brushes guide.
Is Clip Studio Paint Pro better than EX?
EX is not better for everyone, it simply does more. PRO covers illustration and single-page comics. EX adds multi-page projects, webtoon tools, PDF and e-book export and full-length animation, for $277 once or $76.99 a year against $63 and $26.99 for PRO.
Should you buy Clip Studio Paint permanently?
