Clip Studio Paint vs Krita comes down to one question: do you need comic, line art and animation tools enough to pay for them? Clip Studio Paint is the better tool for inking, manga, webtoons and multi-page comics, and it runs on iPad and iPhone. Krita is free, open source and is the better starting point for painting, sketching and learning. This guide compares both on price, drawing feel, comics, animation, platforms and what studios ask for in job posts.

The Short Answer

Choose Clip Studio Paint if you draw comics, manga, webtoons or clean line art, want to animate with a proper cel timeline, or work on an iPad or phone as well as a computer. Choose Krita if you paint or sketch, want zero cost, work on Windows, macOS or Linux, or are still deciding whether digital art is for you. Many artists use both: Krita to learn and paint, Clip Studio Paint once a comic or animation project needs its extra tools.

If neither feels right, the full ranking is in the best digital art software guide, and painters should read digital painting software. Comparing Clip Studio Paint with other tools? See Clip Studio Paint vs Procreate and Photoshop vs Clip Studio Paint.

What Studios Ask For: ArtBlast Job Data

ArtBlast counted how many of 508 distinct 2D art, concept art, illustration, comic and visual development job posts (full descriptions only, March to August 2026) name each program. A post is counted once however many tools it lists.

Software named in the job postPosts (of 508)Share
Adobe Photoshop26151%
Clip Studio Paint286%
Krita30.6%

The takeaway: neither program is a hiring requirement. Clip Studio Paint appears in about one post in 18, mostly for illustration, comic, anime-style and animation roles, and 25 of those 28 posts also name Photoshop. Krita appears in 3 posts, too few to draw a conclusion except that studios do not screen for it. A mention means the studio lists the tool as a skill or part of its pipeline, not that every artist must own it. If employment is the goal, pick the tool that makes your portfolio best, export PSD files, and learn Photoshop alongside it. Browse openings that name these tools: illustrator jobs, comic artist jobs and 2D artist jobs.

Price: Free vs $63 or a Yearly Plan

Krita costs nothing. There is no trial, no subscription and no locked feature, and the source code is open under the GNU GPL v3 license. The Krita team also sells paid copies on Steam, the Microsoft Store, the Epic Games Store and the Mac App Store, which fund development and add automatic updates. The free download on krita.org is the same program.

Clip Studio Paint has two editions and three ways to pay (Version 5.0 is the current one-time edition):

  • PRO for illustration and single-page comics: $63 once for Windows and macOS, or $26.99 a year on the single-device plan.
  • EX adds multi-page comic projects, full-length animation tools and PDF and e-book export: $277 once, or $76.99 a year.
  • Monthly plans run $4.49 for PRO and $8.99 for EX, and the purchase page advertises plans from $0.99 a month with the first three months free.

Subscriptions cover every device, including iPad, iPhone and Android, and include new feature updates. The one-time license is Windows and macOS only and gets later feature updates through the optional Update Pass ($10.99 a year for PRO, $31.99 for EX). Over three years, a PRO yearly plan costs $80.97 against $0 for Krita, so the real question is whether the extra tools pay you back. A Clip Studio Paint free trial lets you test that before you pay.

Drawing Feel, Brushes and Line Art

Both programs feel good under a pen, which is why this comparison is close. The difference is in what each is built around.

Clip Studio Paint is built around line. Pen stabilization is tunable, vector layers keep lines sharp and editable after you draw them, and the Correct Line tool lets you pinch, simplify, join and re-width strokes without redrawing. Rulers do the hard geometry: linear, curve, symmetry, perspective and fisheye perspective rulers snap strokes to your guides while you draw freehand. Thousands of brushes, textures and 3D models are available in its asset library, and it imports Photoshop .abr brushes.

Krita is built around painting. It ships with over 100 preloaded brushes and more than nine brush engines, including color smudge, shape, particle and filter engines, with three stabilizer modes and a dynamic brush tool. A wrap-around mode previews seamless textures as you paint, drawing assistants handle vanishing points and ellipses, and the pop-up palette keeps brushes and colors under your cursor. For blending, color mixing and loose digital painting it matches paid tools.

In practice: inkers and comic artists tend to prefer Clip Studio Paint, and painters tend to be happy in Krita. If you are comparing painting programs more widely, see the digital painting software guide.

Comics, Manga and Webtoons

This is the clearest gap. Clip Studio Paint began as Manga Studio and still carries the toolset: frame border and panel division tools, speech balloons and tails, screen tones, speed and focus line tools, text layers and, in EX, multi-page projects with page management, webtoon tools and PDF or e-book export. A whole chapter can live in one project file.

Krita has built-in vector tools and a library of speech bubble templates, which is enough for a single page or a strip. It has no multi-page project manager, so a long comic means managing separate files yourself. If comics are your goal, Clip Studio Paint saves hours on every page.

Animation

Both programs animate frame by frame. Krita's animation workspace is free and handles thousands of frames, with onion skinning, audio support, tweening for opacity and position, and export to video or still images. Video export runs through FFmpeg, a free encoder that Krita's manual says you set up once before exporting.

Clip Studio Paint uses a cel and timeline system with light table onion skinning. Here the edition matters: PRO is limited to simple animation of up to 24 frames, and EX is needed for full-length work. Because animation is an EX feature, a Krita-only animator spends nothing while a Clip Studio Paint animator spends $76.99 a year or $277 once. Read the full workflow in the Clip Studio Paint animation guide, then check 2D animator jobs to see what studios hire for.

Platforms, Files and Hardware

  • Clip Studio Paint runs on Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, Chromebook and Galaxy devices. Its native format is .clip, and it opens and exports layered PSD files, so work can move to Photoshop.
  • Krita runs on Windows 8.1 or higher, macOS 10.15 or higher and Linux, plus Android. There is no iPad version. It needs 4 GB of RAM at minimum (16 GB recommended) and a GPU with OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11. Its native format is .kra, and it reads and writes PSD, so layered files travel both ways.

Any graphics tablet your operating system recognizes works with Krita, and Clip Studio Paint works with the same tablets. If you are picking hardware, start with the best drawing programs for a Wacom tablet and the drawing tablet rankings.

Clip Studio Paint: Pros and Cons

Clip Studio Paint app icon

Best for: comics, manga, webtoons, line art and frame-by-frame animation.

  • Pros: the strongest ink and line tools at this price, vector layers and Correct Line, rulers and 3D models for backgrounds and poses, real comic page tools, runs on every major device, one-time purchase available, free monthly and yearly bonus materials on subscriptions.
  • Cons: costs money, the iPad and phone versions need a subscription, animation beyond 24 frames and multi-page comics need EX, a dense interface that takes time to set up, and a small share of studio job posts.

See Clip Studio Paint plans and the free trial. Studio hiring is covered in the best digital art software guide.

Krita: Pros and Cons

Krita app icon

Best for: painting, sketching and anyone who wants a complete program at no cost.

  • Pros: free with no limits, a deep brush engine, stabilizers and a pop-up palette, wrap-around mode for textures, drawing assistants, free animation workspace, active development (version 5.3.4.1 came out on October 7, 2026), huge community resources.
  • Cons: no iPad version, no multi-page comic tools, open-source projects can ship bugs, animation video export needs FFmpeg set up, a smaller selection of brush and 3D assets than Clip Studio Paint's library, and almost no studio demand.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • You are a beginner on a budget: start with Krita. It costs nothing, and the habits you build (layers, masks, brushes, PSD export) carry over to any program.
  • You make comics, manga or webtoons: Clip Studio Paint, and EX if the project has many pages.
  • You animate: Krita to learn and for short loops, Clip Studio Paint EX for full productions and its cel workflow.
  • You draw on an iPad or phone: Clip Studio Paint, since Krita does not run on iPad. If you only need sketching on iPad, compare Clip Studio Paint vs Procreate and the best drawing software for iPad.
  • You want a studio job: use whichever gives you the best portfolio, and learn Photoshop too. See Photoshop vs Clip Studio Paint for that comparison.

A sensible low-risk path is to use Krita until you hit a wall, then try Clip Studio Paint's trial on the same project and see whether the extra tools save you time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Clip Studio Paint better than Krita?

For comics, manga, line art and animation, yes. Clip Studio Paint has vector line editing, rulers, comic page tools and a cel timeline that Krita lacks or only partly covers. For painting and sketching the gap is small, and Krita costs nothing.

What are the disadvantages of Krita?

Krita has no iPad version, no multi-page comic manager and a smaller asset library than Clip Studio Paint. As open-source software it can have bugs, and exporting animation to video needs FFmpeg set up. Its interface is also dense for beginners, although it stays out of the way once you save a workspace.

Is Clip Studio Paint professional?

Yes. It is used for professional comics, manga, webtoons, character art and animation. PRO covers illustration, and EX adds multi-page comics and full animation. In ArtBlast's tracking it appears in about 6% of 2D art job posts, usually next to Photoshop.

Do any professionals use Krita?

Yes, many freelancers and small teams paint in Krita, but studios rarely list it: only 3 of 508 tracked 2D art job posts name it. Krita exports PSD and PNG, so clients can open the files without owning the program.

Is Krita or Clip Studio Paint better for animation?

Krita is better value for hobby and short animation, because its timeline is free and handles thousands of frames. Clip Studio Paint EX is better for full production with a cel workflow, though PRO stops at 24 frames.

Is Krita just as good as Photoshop?

For drawing and painting, Krita holds its own. Photoshop is stronger for photo editing, mockups, type and studio handoff, and it is named in 51% of tracked 2D art posts against 0.6% for Krita. See best digital art software for the full comparison.

What is better than Krita?

It depends on the work. Clip Studio Paint is better for comics and line art, Photoshop for studio pipelines, Procreate for the iPad, and Rebelle or Corel Painter for realistic paint.

Do people still use Krita?

Yes. Version 5.3.4.1 was released on October 7, 2026, and the project keeps shipping updates on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.

Is Clip Studio Paint free?

No, but it has a long free trial. Its download page lists trials of up to three months on most platforms (the iPhone app is free for 30 hours a month). After that you need a plan or a one-time license.

The exact prices and trial rules are in the Clip Studio Paint price guide.

Is MediBang better than Clip Studio Paint?

MediBang Paint is free and covers basic drawing and comics. Clip Studio Paint has the deeper toolset (vector editing, rulers, 3D models, animation), which matters more as comic projects get larger.
