What the Interview Process Looks Like
VFX artist interviews test both artistic sensibility and technical depth. Knowing what each stage evaluates helps you prepare the right evidence at the right time.
Portfolio Review
Studios want to see real-time in-engine effects first. Breakdown videos with node graphs or particle system screenshots signal technical fluency. Offline simulations alone are not enough for game roles.
Recruiter Screen
30-45 minutes covering your background, primary tools, and engine experience. Ask whether the role is gameplay VFX, environment VFX, or UI -- these require different skill emphasis.
VFX Art Test
3-7 days. A brief with a specific game scenario -- combat ability, weather event, destruction. Performance budget is usually included. Deliver clean node graphs and documented systems, not just pretty captures.
Final Interview
Panel with art director and lead VFX artist. Covers process, how you work within performance constraints, cross-discipline communication, and how you receive and apply creative feedback.
